Discourse has always remained an integral part of society, and throughout history and even till now, it is situated in every aspect of human life. As a part of discourse cinema produces and reproduces a certain kind of knowledge, reflecting a certain kind of culture and ideology. It is said that cinema is a reflection of society and it also represents, influences, and indoctrinates a particular kind of ideas and practices within society. In this way, it becomes not only an important source of entertainment but also a reflection of understanding the workings of society. The phenomenon of disability does not remain untouched by the cinema world. Some filmmakers have taken it as a central theme of their films; others have integrated it with other social issues. Disability has always been a complex subject to portray in cinema and when it intersects with gender it becomes more complex. Hence, in this paper, researchers are trying to look at the cinematic representation of women with disabilities. The aim of this paper is to understand the discourse on disability by comparing the portrayal of women with disability in Bollywood cinema and Hollywood cinema. Films made in the last twenty years (from 1990 till the present) having a disability as a subject will be analyzed by critical discourse analysis from a comparative perspective. It was found that both Hollywood and Bollywood have a limited number of movies in which the protagonist was a ‘woman with disabilities’ irrespective of the mass production of films every year. Additionally, these limited movies represent something unconventional, something extraordinary and inspirational that provide us glimpses of the life, struggle, confusion, and hard work of women with disabilities in society. It was also found that the representation of women with intellectual disabilities is very less in both Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
