Culture is an integral part of the history of the human race. It is an inalienable substance to human existence. The continuous flow of cultural traits from one generation to another can be observed as the transfer of tangible and intangible forms of culture.Tangible cultural heritage can be touched, exists in a concrete form and allows people to have a direct relation or possession on it. On the other side Intangible cultural heritage plays a relevant role in integrating people from different origins under an umbrella of rituals, traditions and customs.Cultural heritage sites have always been the space for sharing of knowledge, reciprocity of actions, collective wisdom of cultural traditions. Some major Ghats and religious landscapes of Varanasi always had the privilege of accommodating pilgrims and visitors for their purposes. There have been attempts from the government and non-government organizations to settle down the issues of space management, sanitation facilities at Ghats by Namami Gange project ,cleanliness drive of Swachh Bharat Mission. All these efforts of making favourable conditions for cultural promotion and safeguarding are required to be overlooked essentially. This introspection will clear the picture in which way people are establishing their bond with the cultural heritage sites as well as their involvement in it. It will ultimately highlight the Socio-Cultural Environment of the holy City. This paper will bring light on the efforts of safeguarding of both forms of cultural heritage and dealing with the odds and challenges of the cultural landscape of Varanasi. This study will incorporate group discussions, focused interviews and participant observation for the collection of data. This research work will be beneficial to understand the safeguarding efforts of culture and their impact on the society.
