The study understands images as found visuals that includes photos, videos, performative action, material objects and digital archives found by the researcher in the field. The theory of visuals used to substantiate this argues that all images or “found visuals” are not merely to produce new knowledge by “translating” it, but are open to interpretation and “triangulate the other knowledge” (Sarah Pink, 2001).
Found visuals could be playing various roles in the field. Adding to the interest of the panel, found visuals are not only to communicate or to be informed, but they also just exist. But the essence of its existence lies in its capture. Capturing found visuals on field through visual methods, hence becomes important to address a research.
This study would highlight 4 case studies from my work, considering 3 points of deliberation: what is the found visual, how is the found visual captured, and how does the interpretation of the found visual help in furthering the research knowledge. The areas in which these 4 case studies are situated include the physical space, to understand religion and spirituality, and the digital space, to understand hashtag activism and role as a communications strategist.
