Long Abstract
:

Mental retardation (MR) is an inherited disorder and also the most common developmental disorder that presents with deficits in overall intellectual capacity and adaptive behavior that are well below average. Intellectual disability is calculated as an IQ= mental age/chronological age × 100. As per the literature, globally the prevalence is found to be in the range of 1-3% and in India it is estimated to be 3.1% (rural) and 0.9% (urban) areas. The current research is an attempt to understand the various strategies followed by the parents and care takes of the children suffering from MR to cope and adjust with everyday challenges. The data for the study has been collected both from the primary and secondary source. Existing literature review shows that very few studies indicate how the parents/caregivers are handling such children. As per the list of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department, Govt. of Odisha it is estimated that in Odisha 6471 number of residential schools going and 344 non-residential school going children are diagnosed with Intellectual Disability. This particular study intended to study various strategies applied by the parents/ caregivers to manage the children with such kind of developmental disability. The study result shows that the parents /caregivers are facing a lot of problem in handling such child even though they have developed different strategy to tackle such children. From such strategy a kind of model has been developed.
