Brokpas, The traditional Yak Herder Nomads of Arunachal Pradesh, India
Short Abstract
:
Brokpas are the nomadic yak herders found in the high mountains of the eastern Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh. Yak has socio-cultural importance in the Brokpa society due to centuries old transhumance practices.
Long Abstract
:

Brokpas, a semi nomadic indigenous community of Arunachal Pradesh are traditional yak herders who for centuries have been rearing yaks. Yaks are their most prized animals due to their multiferous use. Yak provides nutrition in the form of milk and meat, clothing and used as beast of burden. Butter tea is a very important cultural marker of Brokpas. However, due to the difficulties associated with yak rearing there is a decline in its population despite government intervention. Therefore, this paper address the challenges faced by the Brokpas in terms of yak rearing and how far the new changes are a threat to the traditional way of life of the Brokpa herders.
