Export performance and competitiveness of millet in India
Short Abstract
:
Millet which also known as nutri-cereals are widely grown in India for their great potential in nutritional security and climate resilient crops. The present study examined the export performance and competitiveness of millet. The export performance and competitiveness of millets in India have been examined using secondary data from 2000-01 to 2010-11 as period I and 2011-12 to 2021-22 as period II. The growth in export of millets to different countries for period I was lower than period II which implies that there has increase of standard in quality. In case of millets, Saudi Arab and Nepal in period I and UAE in period II. The study advocates that different strategies for export to different countries may be oriented for stabilizing the export of millets.
Long Abstract
:

Millets hold a great potential in contributing substantially to food as well as nutritional security of the country. Hence, these are not only a source of different nutrients but also drought tolerant crops which possess unique characteristics for sustaining large population. Millets have been considered as a staple of the Indian food, especially in rural India. India is currently the world's fifth largest exporter of millets, with exports increasing at a 3% CAGR over the last five years ending in 2020. India exported millets worth US$ 26.97 million in 2020-21, compared to US$ 28.5 million in 2019-20.
