Short Abstract

Choice is an emergent buzzword defining schooling and its processes in India today. In choice context, schooling becomes a deeply competitive field and a site of reproducing social inequalities. India’s small towns like Alwar have witnessed a mushrooming of diverse types of private schools catering to various social groups. Market model of educating a child is gradually becoming a pervasive social reality in India and its urban centers. This paper is an attempt to understand the emerging landscape of school choice discourse and its implications in a small town context in India.
