Identifying Talents in sports at the early stage is very important to develop the sports scenario of a nation. Morphological aspects as well as physical characteristics of an athlete is very important besides other factors like personal skill, psychological aspects, Biomechanical aspects, hereditary adaptation etc. Game-specific physical characteristics as well as body type including somatotype influence performance level and reduce injury during training. Sports Anthropometry is a special area of Kinanthropometry that is a part of Physical Anthropology, which deals with the Physical and morphological characteristics of an individual. The application of Anthropometry in sports can be divided into two major areas – one is during talent hunt by identifying the ideal body type as well as ideal segmental limbic lengths like arm span, arm length, Hand length, palm areas etc besides height, weight, body composition, and body ratio along with expected mature height during adulthood from parent’s height. And secondly during the training period, monitoring the anthropometrical aspects including body composition, somatotype, viz., fattiness and muscularity, and well-proportioned growth & development. The role of Anthropometry is very important in identification of proper growth and development of physical parameters during pre-adolescent and adolescent periods which impact the success of the sportsman in the future during adulthood. In this way the involvement of Anthropologists in sports is increasing in contemporary sports arena as one of the various avenues for the development of sports by identifying and monitoring of athletes.
