The main objective of the Erasmus-Plus “Bridging Digital” project was to explore the potential of digital technology in facilitating the creation and dissemination of Art, as well as its use for educational purposes. The contribution of the Hellenic Adult Education Association (HAEA) to the project focused on developing ways in which the digital medium can enhance the creativity of artists working in traditional theatrical forms and also help them reach a wider audience. For that purpose we collaborated with “Angels of Joy”, a team of performance artists, educators and psychologists offering psychosocial support through Art to children hosted in institutions, as well as to elderly people and persons with disabilities. The severe restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which made live performance unfeasible, introduced the challenge to convert the theatrical act to a form that can be digitally distributed to these audiences, without reducing its impact. Towards this end, an original theatrical work was created, based on the personal stories of elderly persons in nursing homes, which was subsequently adapted to the digital medium by using essentially cinematic tools and techniques. The finished product, a 12-minute video entitled “The Song of my Life”, was shown to the social group which inspired its creation, within the confines of a nursing home. The 33-minute documentary film “At the Site of the Angels”, a production of HAEA, records the entire process from staging the theatrical act and creating its audiovisual rendition, to its first screening and the dramatic impact it had on its audience. The aim of the film is twofold: provide a creative and practical tool to artistic / theatrical groups for digitally recording and disseminating their work, and to study the value of this tool in breaking the barriers that keep sensitive social groups marginalized and isolated.
