Long Abstract
:

Infertility is an acute and unacceptable life crises affecting many people of reproductive age worldwide.. The structure of family is based on marriage and children have made it functional for the society. Child is important for the identity of women .A critical milestone in a woman’s life after marriage is motherhood. Infertility makes the family dysfunctional. Infertility is considered primarily a women's problem. Women are dubiously blamed for infertility and suffer from personal grief, frustration, social stigma, ostracism, leading to marginalization of women in society.  Being childless has more negative socio-cultural and emotional effects on women than any other non-life threatening condition. Due to the highly valued and important role of reproduction in a patriarchal society like India, childlessness is not only unacceptable, but also is unimaginable and is seen as a failure to comply with cultural norms. Women experience physical, mental and emotional abuse, taunts and verbal abuse from their husbands and in-laws, and are socially excluded from important events like marriages and forbidden to touch others children, threatened with divorce or her husband is forced to marry another women and is separated from her marital house. Women suffer from psychosocial consequences of depression, unhappiness, hopelessness and having suicidal thoughts, they feel marginalized in society. Marginalization of women is a socially constructed reality. In light of this the aim of this paper is to understand the problem of infertility among women. Qualitative analysis will be made through case study in Lucknow city.
