Impact of Consumption of Millets on Pregnant women: Some Issues
Short Abstract
:
A pregnant woman requires nutritious food to facilitate better growth and development of the fetus. Iron deficiency is one of the major health problems in pregnant women during pre natal and post natal period due to unawareness about proper iron rich food, carelessness of their health and socio-economic status of family. Millets can be taken as complementary food as these are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and free from gluten.

Pre natal and post natal period of pregnancy are very crucial as it requires adequate intake of iron rich foods. Millets provides better nutrition and regulate blood sugar level than rice and wheat grain. Despite many nutritional values, millets were viewed as grains for the poor and often are neglected. Iron deficiency is one of the major health problems in pregnant women which need to be overcome by focusing on traditional crop such as millets. This research paper has two objectives; to examine the awareness about health benefits of millets in pregnant women and to assess the present status of taking millets as complementary food during pre natal and post natal period of pregnancy. The relevance of this study is that it will help in policy formulation for the pregnant women and people will become aware about health benefits of millets and will include it in their main staple food. Impact of global warming is increasing day by day hence there is a need of climate resilient crops that is not only nutritious but also climate smart and eco-friendly.
