Abstract Title
:
The Night Master And Their Space: A Practice of Multimodal Ethnography in Zhuang’s Community
Short Abstract
:
This article is about my practice in multimodal ethnography in a Zhuang community. During my fieldwork, I utilized multiple media to document and depict the daily life and sensory space of local psychics and their followers. The outcome includes a film, several images and audio-video footage, a non-fictional narrative, and a report. Through this case study, I aim to illustrate how the use of different media can lead to varied sensory experiences.
Long Abstract
:

Multimodal ethnography has been an invoked word in visual anthropology, facilitating the representation of diverse perspectives held by both anthropologists and local communities through the use of multimedia. In this article, I focus on the comparison between different media in illustrating the sensory space of psychics. This research draws on fieldwork conducted in Dongmen(Chinese:??), a Zhuang(Chinese:?) community located in southern China, where I collaborated with a local psychic to produce a non-fictional narrative and an ethnographic film. By analyzing the diverse methods and outcomes in my fieldwork, I aim to elucidate the dynamic interaction between local communities, the social space they are in, and researchers across various media.
