Abstract Title
:
Sapera Community: An Ethnographic Study of Snake Charmers in Haryana state.
Short Abstract
:
Indian society has so many caste groups. The Sapera community is one among them. They are the one, who does snake charming and folk dance for their livelihood. Snake charming is their main occupation. They used to live in the village area, where they practice this. But now in the present time, they struggle for their survival. In this paper, I will discuss the history of the Sapera community and their struggle in the present time in Haryana state.
Long Abstract
:

Sapera is one of the folk dance artists in India. In Rajasthan Kalbelia community is popular among Sapera caste. They are popular dance artists all over the world. In Haryana state, the condition of Sapera community is much different than the Rajasthan. They struggle for their livelihood. There are also engaged in other occupations for their survival. They also take out the snake poison after the snake bite. Sapera is famous for this work. Nowadays hospital facilities are there in villages too. But in the past time, people relied on the Sapera community for the treatment of a snake bite. They were the nomadic tribes too in some areas. Nowadays their living pattern has changed due to modernization. Modernization has changed their lives in many ways. They were a popular community for entertainment in the 20th century. They were the main attraction of marriages and fairs. But nowadays the fair's tradition in the village has vanished over a period of time. Thus the popularity of Sapera has faded. I will discuss the following question in my paper:  How do they perform their occupation? How do they deal with the government law on the wildlife protection act? How do they play a part in the cultural life in the village? How do they survive and what do they do for a living?  The method of conducting this research is the Ethnographic survey. In this survey, I  participated in their environment and observed their work. The environment and the condition of the village provide me a picture of their condition in those particular villages. I have looked look upon the shift of the socio-cultural perspectives of Sapera community in the Haryana state. I will also focus on the next generation`s future scope of this occupation in my paper.
