“Psychosocial Distress among Women in Varanasi: A Case Study on the Impact of COVID-19 on Work”
Short Abstract
:
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing gender inequality in the workplace, disproportionately affecting women in Varanasi, India. Women faced increased workloads and stress while struggling to maintain their employment status. Interviews with women revealed added stress and increased workloads, highlighting the need for policies and programs that address gender inequality and provide greater support for women's work-life balance, including flexible work arrangements and childcare. Addressing these challenges can lead to a more equitable and supportive society.
Long Abstract
:

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the personal and social lives of people worldwide, with women being disproportionately affected. In Varanasi, a small city in India, women faced additional challenges due to pre-existing gender inequality in the workplace. The lack of freedom and equal pay for equal work made it difficult for women to navigate the pandemic's effects on their employment status. As a result, many women experienced psychosocial distress, juggling both office work and household responsibilities while facing the added pressure of joblessness and uncertainty. This paper aims to explore the specific challenges faced by women in Varanasi during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the impact on their psychosocial well-being. Using a case study approach, we conducted interviews with women in Varanasi to gather data on their experiences and analyze the effects of the pandemic on their work and personal lives. Our findings show that women in Varanasi were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, facing increased workloads and added stress while struggling to maintain their employment status. The study's implications highlight the need for policies and programs that address gender inequality in the workplace, particularly in small cities like Varanasi. Such measures should aim to provide greater support for women in balancing their work and personal lives, including access to flexible work arrangements and childcare. By recognizing and addressing the specific challenges faced by women in Varanasi during the COVID-19 pandemic, we can work towards a more equitable and supportive society for all.
