Long Abstract
:

This study examines the impact of modernization on the livelihood of the Konyak Nagas, one of the indigenous tribes in Mon district of Nagaland, India. The Konyak tribe has a strong connection to their natural environment and a rich cultural past. This study employs mixed methods quantitative as well as qualitative and draws on in-depth interviews and participant observation to comprehend the changes that modernization has brought about in the Konyak way of life. The research employs continuity and change framework and modernization theory as analytical tools. 100 households were covered for the quantitative data and 30 interviews were conducted by me. The main focus was to study the traditional livelihood practices, changes over time, their economic activities, challenges as well as opportunities and their future aspiration w.r.t livelihood. Modernization has improved education, employment, and drove them towards inclusivity, raising the standard of living for the Konyak people. It has also led to the emergence of new economic opportunities, such as wage labor, trade, and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, traditional practices have gradually been compromised as a result of modernization. The study comes to the conclusion that modernization has significantly changed the Konyak way of life, with both positive and negative ways. This includes the need to support the revival of traditional livelihood practices, promote sustainable agriculture, and conserve natural resources. The findings of this study have implications for policy and practice and can be used to inform the design of more sustainable and inclusive development strategies for the Konyak people.
