Abstract Title
:
Production, Utilization and Farmers’ Perception on Millet Cultivation
Short Abstract
:
The present paper aims to study the production and utilization pattern of millets, and farmers’ perception on millet cultivation using primary data. Bhiwani district of Haryana and Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh were chosen, respectively, for Bajra and Jowar for the study. Net returns per hectare was worked out to be low when compared to other crops. The Garret ranking method was employed to identify and prioritize reasons for preference and constraints on millet cultivation. The high cost of hybrid seed, lack of sufficient rainfall, unavailability of HYV, high cost of fertilizer, occurrences of pests and diseases, and labor unavailability were the major constraints perceived by the farmers in the study area.
Long Abstract
:

Millets which is known nowadays as nutri-cereals are gaining attention due to its nutritional qualities and climate resilient nature although these were overshadowed by other cereals and cash crops during past few decades. The present paper aims to study the production and utilization pattern of millets, and farmers’ perception on millet cultivation by using primary data. Bhiwani district of Haryana and Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh were chosen respectively for Bajra and Jowar for the study. Millet cultivation provides for sustainable way for achieving food and nutritional security. Consumption of millets offers solution to many of the lifestyle diseases which are common nowadays because of its dietary quality. Therefore, millet cultivation may be a better alternate option to resource intensive crops. But area under millet cultivation as well as consumption have been declining. In this context, the study has attempted to examine the production aspects, utilization pattern and constraints in millet production. Net returns per hectare was found to be low when compared to other cereals like rice and wheat. High cost of hybrid seed, lack of sufficient rain fall, unavailability of high yielding varieties, lack of technical knowledge and occurrence of pest and diseases were found to constrain millet cultivation as perceived by farmers in the study area. Hence, to make this crop more attractive and remunerative productivity may be enhanced through adoption of high yielding varieties and better management practices. The increasing awareness about health benefits of millets among people encourages the prospects for value addition. Also, development of new products and processing techniques according to consumer preferences and strengthening of producer -processor -consumer linkage may help in augmentation of millet production in the country.
