Most of the Acheulian sites in Indian sub-continent are open air in nature and these are getting exposed to the surface in recent years due to rapid deforestation and soil erosion. Very often such sites are considered as disturbed and hence no detail study is carried out beyond typo-technological analysis. Therefore such sites are usually ignored from the point of view of understanding hominid behaviour. Considering this mind-set by most, it is decided to develop a methodology for such sites where the lithic artefact scatter can be studied in best possible manner that would help in understanding certain aspects of hominid behaviour. While doing so, it has been further realised that various disturbance process that are operating on such surface scatter of artefacts are required to be considered.
Keeping in view the above theoretical framework, an attempt has been made to develop a methodology to study the surface scatter of Acheulian artefacts at Tikoda-II district Raisen, Madhya Pradesh. At this site various parameters that have been identified for study of surface sites are being applied to understand various hominid behaviour such as- different activity areas, signatures of repeated occupation, nature of activities and ofcourse the post-depositional disturbances if any.
