Megaliths are the most visibly attractive remains encountered on the landscape, which show a connection with the past. They represent society and human perceptions and the changes that have taken place since ancient times. Being of different sizes, shapes and materials; the megalithic structures are widely studied.
Megaliths in Garo Hills are a living tradition with the least documentation. The usage of different materials and the stories attached to the installation of the memorials makes the structure more unique in nature. The paper explores the concept of memorials for the dead among the Garos of Mandalgre and Sadolpara villages. This paper is an outcome of the preliminary exploration carried out in the said villages, with an attempt to explore and document the social implications, legends, taboos etc related to the Megalithic tradition in Garo Hills.
