This paper is based on an extensive fieldwork undertaken in the villages of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, with the objective of understanding the complex process of development through an anthropological lens. The primary goal is to investigate the dynamic interplay between anthropological perspectives and the trajectory of development as perceived and comprehended by the local population. This study seeks to shed light on the transformative effects of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) on the neighbouring villages of Mandi, by looking into local narratives, understandings, and inspirations surrounding development.
The investigation was conducted carefully using a combination of approaches including observation, in-depth interviews, collection of case studies, and comparative analysis. These techniques allowed for a thorough understanding of the unique social structure and cultural changes of these villages. The key findings highlight apparent changes in societal dynamics, structural arrangements, and cultural perspectives. These changes are noticeable due to the prominent indicators of social change, such as modernization, urbanization, and occupational mobility, which illustrate the complexity of the continuing shifts.
The findings of this study have significant implications for the development and application of policy. It emphasizes the value of local viewpoints and narratives in determining the course of development projects and, thereby, emphasizes the value of anthropological insights in understanding and tackling the complex processes of societal change and transition. The bottom-up approach to planning, which is informed by anthropological insights, not only improves the effectiveness of development programs but also aligns with the global objective of sustainable development.
