Looking at the past ethnography, we intend to point out the current situation of ethnographic development, and analyze the reasons for the inadequacy of today's ethnography from three aspects: methodology, epistemology and practice, so as to propose the future development direction. From a methodological point of view, the research object is limited to the bottom research of villages, ethnic areas, etc.; Limited sources of research data; The content of the study is mainly traditional rituals and beliefs. Starting from epistemology, it is mainly based on white drawing, indignation, and application to verify Western theories; From a practical point of view, more attention is paid to traditional villages, and there is a lack of explanatory power for rural modernization, urban development, complex society, and complex organization, but ethnography does not only record problems, but also needs to solve problems and form its own views.
