Losing a parent is undoubtedly a traumatic experience that affects a child's overall development as an orphan. An orphan is a child under the age of 18 who has lost his or her biological parents for any reason (UNICEF, 2008). Increasing number of orphans and abandoned children around the world have proved to be a challenging problem. Recently, The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimated that a total of 153 million children, from infants to teens, have lost one or both parents (Thabet et al.,2014). Researchers have found that orphan children usually face many problems like, losing parents, caregivers to socio-psychological problems arising out of their parental loss and the emotional warmth of their homes. Socio-psychological well-being is one of the important components of a children's general well-being, therefore it is important for the survival and development of orphan child.
The objective of this study is to review the mental health and socio-psychological well-being of orphans. So that some efforts can be considered for their mental health and to make their life better which they also deserve like other children adolescents. because orphans are also an important part of this society and they should not be neglected.
In this paper Primary as well as secondary data has been used. Exploratory method is applied to review the scenario of orphans and descriptive method is used to collect data from different countries and regions.
The present study suggests that orphans in institutional homes and OVCA are vulnerable to behavioral and emotional problems. These children should be screened regularly for conduct problems, emotional problems, hyperactivity, and peer problems. Given the paucity of data in this regard, several multi-centre studies also need to be conducted to get an overall understanding.
The findings suggest that we must improve support and reconsider the role of society.
