Abstract
Background: The present tribal population of West Bengal is 5.8% among them 7.1% are Bhumij tribes. They are the 4th largest tribe in West Bengal. Problem of aging is one of the prominent causes of issue in the tribal community. The unstable income source due to the absence of any stable occupation and growing expenditure in health regarding issues are concerns of old aged people. Tribal population in these regards faces more problem than non-tribals. Aim: The major aims of this study are to evaluate the economic activity and income source in 50 years and older Bhumij tribal peoples of Bankura, West Bengal. Sample Size: A total 406 adults (182 male and 224 female) aged 50 years and above were included in this study. Methodology: A purposive sampling method was used to select the participants. Schedule and interview method were applied to collect data on their present economic activity and income source. Results: This study found 37.2% participants have monthly income between 1001-2000 rupees. Only 7.1% participants have monthly income between 4001-5000 rupees. Most of the participants (44.6%) do farming as that is their primary occupation. Conclusion: Studies in this topic are scanty most importantly in various tribal communities who are in a more vulnerable position then the non-tribal population. We need to conduct more such studies in the tribal population to properly comprehend the situation only after that solution would be possible.
