Abstract Title
:
A new nexus of urban-rural agriculture, livelihoods and food security in Indonesia.
Short Abstract
:
My research has involved discovering, documenting and analysing a range of bottom-up, community based developments in sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods and food security.  The unprecedented historic reversal of decades of rural>urban migration across Asia sparked by the Covid pandemic did not result in a revival of rural economies and agricultures, but nevertheless it does seem to have been a catalyst for a new round of agricultural and rural livelihood initiatives and urban-rural connections mostly generated by a new generation of both urban and rural people. This paper reports on these.
Long Abstract
:

My research (with Thomas Reuter) in Java and Bali over the past few years has involved discovering, documenting and analysing a range of bottom-up, community based developments in sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods and food security.  A year ago, we were wondering (hoping?) whether the unprecedented historic reversal of decades of rural>urban migration across Asia sparked by the Covid pandemic might be the beginning of a (equally historic) revival of rural economies and agricultures. A year on (April 2023) this does not appear to have happened on any significant scale. Nevertheless the pandemic does seem to have been a catalyst for a new round of agricultural and rural livelihood initiatives and urban-rural connections mostly generated by a new generation of both urban and rural people. By the time of this conference, we will have been in Indonesia again and we hope to be able to report in more detail.
