: Bangladesh also known as Bengal Delta is located in the Monsoon Asia, a region from Japan to South Asia. A number of domesticated livestock are reared here. Except chicken industry, almost all the livestock in Bangladesh are reared under subsistence farming system ranging from semi-intensive system in household farming to extensive system in nomadic system. Buffalo, pig and duck are the livestock in Bangladesh associated with nomadism. Buffalo is an important livestock in providing milk, meat, draught power, manure, hide and employment generation in the country. In fact, 95% of the total dairy buffaloes in the country are found in the attached char of Padma- Brahmanputra river and offshore island of the Bay of Bengal. Dairy buffaloes are now highly hounoured due to their ability to produce safe and nutritious food as milk and meat. Buffalo milk and meat is, therefore, more expensive than cow milk and meat nowadays. In attached char, dairy buffaloes are reared under transhumant system whereas in the offshore island, dairy buffaloes are reared under nomadic system. The buffalo herders in both systems are male and move with the animals. They may be owner of the buffalo or may be paid cowboy of the owner. The small herds are usually maintained by owner, the larger herds ae maintained by paid cowboy. Nomadic herders usually visit their family once a month and transhumant herders visit their family forth nightly.. Buffalo herders in the attached char may participate in social festivals, but those in the offshore islands have little chance to do so. With all limitation, the nomadic buffalo herders play a key role in producing and supplying valuable buffalo milk in the country.
