Long Abstract
:

The neo-liberal development discourse is about fast growing infrastructures, urban expansion and rising consumerism. This fast growing commercialization and infrastructural development is expanding due to the abundant labour which is necessary for the growth. This paper is focusing on the adivasi labourers who are a part of the huge giant production of development process in every growing Indian cities. Taking a case study of a fast growing city of Ranchi, also known as Smart City, this paper aims to examine the livelihood struggles of the tribal labourers who sprawl to the city each day in search of work in the constructions sites as daily wage workers. Jharkhand is one of the poorest regions of the county with low performance in nutrition and education, which means that most of its population particularly in rural areas and semi-urban areas are living their lives in poverty. Loss of agriculture land due to sale or poor quality land, lack of skill and adequate education, lack of employment opportunities are forcing tribal men and women to migrate to the urban locations in search of livelihood. An attempt has been done to capture the social and lived experiences of these adivasis labourers to understand their struggles and hopes for better living. This study is based on empirical study conducted in Ranchi city. Random sampling has been done to select respondents from the location where labourers assemble. Two such locations have been identified in the city from where everyday labourers are picked to work. A total of 50 respondents have been selected comprising of both male and female workers. Narrative analysis method has been used.
