In India, marriage changes women’s lives. It affects adversely the status of employment. Women must stop working to be homemakers. It is our social reality. Times have changed things even though have changed a lot in terms of gender equality, the numbers are not impressive in any way when one talks about the employment status of women after marriage as compared to men.

In India, marriage changes women’s lives. It affects adversely the status of employment. Women must stop working to be homemakers. It is our social reality. Times have changed things even though have changed a lot in terms of gender equality, the numbers are not impressive in any way when one talks about the employment status of women after marriage as compared to men. This study explores the employment status of married women and men in India and the factors behind the differences in it. The data of NHFS-5 show that the employment status of women in India after marriage is way behind their male counterparts. The objective of this study is to identify this difference and the other parameters related to employment and decision-making among married women in India. It also aims to identify the factors and practices in India that make gender equality in India after marriage a far reality.
