Short Abstract
:
Non-timber forest resources are vital to tribal livelihood systems. Of which, bamboo shoots and mushrooms play a key role and have been cultivated for ages. It is widely harvested for both consumption purposes and sold in fresh form during the season. Efforts have been made to promote wild mushroom cultivation due to strong monetary and health gain indicators from these forest resources. Locals have been commercially benefited and improved their livelihood. Lack of proper documentation of income from the non-timber forest products in this area has been one of the key issues and with no reflection on the policy making process.
Long Abstract
:

Non-timber forest resources are vital to the tribal livelihood systems. Of which, bamboo shoots and mushrooms play a key role and have been cultivated for ages. It is widely harvested for both consumption purposes and sold in fresh form during the season. It is also processed through fermentation (bamboo shoots) and dry (mushrooms) to sell during off season. Fermentation of bamboo shoots can be made in two forms with water and without water for consumption and commercial purposes. Efforts have been made to promote wild mushroom cultivation due to strong monetary and health gain indicators from these forest resources. Households often collect these products to make monetary income in the absence of other means. Every household consumes in one form or another, and also has an ample scope for economic prosperity. To which some locals have been commercially benefited and improved their livelihood. However, lack of proper documentation of income from the non-timber forest products in this area has been one of the key issues and with no reflection on the policy making process. This paper, is an attempt to highlight the importance of non-timber forest products as a means of survival and monetary sources for the tribal, to which institutional mechanism and policy assessment is need of the hour.
